High performing, effective leadership has its origin in the internal work of self-reflection and growth. Leaders are called to a unique role having to balance out the expectations of providing task direction leading to team proficiency, contributing to organizational innovation and growth, as well as providing psychological support. Those in leadership positions are expected to create safe and mentally healthy atmospheres for the people they lead, but who looks out for the bosses? Since leaders often do not analyze the costs and benefits prior to entering into a leadership role or during their tenure in the role, nor do they realize how sociocultural influences impact their psychological well-being and their ability to lead, disengagement and burnout often ensue.
